Southern Charm Meets Chicago Roots
Bret Baier, Fox News’ chief political anchor, is known for his tough questions and interviews with some of the most influential figures in American politics. Away from the cameras, however, he is a devoted husband and father whose family has weathered some extraordinary experiences.
Bret met his wife, Amy, in September 2001 after mutual friends arranged a blind date.
“I’m not sure why they thought it would work,” Amy once told Country Magazine. “But they had a good feeling… They did warn me to buckle up — that a life with Bret Baier would be an interesting ride.”
Their connection was immediate. Amy recalled being impressed by Bret’s manners and personality, saying, “Bret was such a gentleman. He’s from Atlanta and has that Southern charm.”
More Than Two Decades of Marriage
The couple married in October 2004 in Amy’s hometown of Chicago, beginning a partnership that would carry them through both joyful milestones and difficult family challenges.
Amy has often joked about their different hometown loyalties. “I’ve always wanted to live in Chicago, but Bret says he would only move there if they move the nation’s capital,” she quipped.
Before the wedding, Bret also had to win over Amy’s father and three brothers, a process she described as having to “run the gauntlet.”
Over the years, their relationship has remained a central part of their lives. In October 2026, the couple celebrated another wedding anniversary, reflecting on the years they have spent building their family together.
Two Sons and a Family Motto
Bret and Amy share two sons, Paul, born in 2007, and Daniel, born in 2010. Their journey as parents, however, began with a challenge that would profoundly shape their outlook on life.
Paul was born with congenital heart disease and underwent complex heart surgery as an infant. The frightening experience brought uncertainty into their lives but also taught the family an enduring lesson about appreciating every moment.
“We have a saying in the Baier family — ‘gratitude is the attitude,’” Amy told People in 2024. “We learned that from Paul.”
She explained that focusing on the things they have to be thankful for has helped the family navigate even the most difficult circumstances. For the Baiers, gratitude became more than a motto; it became a way of approaching life’s uncertainties with perspective and resilience.
The Montana Car Crash That Changed Everything

In January 2019, the family faced another frightening ordeal during a trip to Montana.
While driving, their SUV encountered icy conditions and entered an intersection, where a pickup truck struck the vehicle on the driver’s side. The impact sent the SUV into a ditch, where it flipped onto its side.
“We slid into the intersection of a busy road… a big pickup slammed into our driver’s side,” Bret later recalled on air.
“The air bags deployed. The windows shattered. We careened into a ditch and flipped sideways.”
Despite the violent collision, everyone survived. Bret sustained a concussion, required stitches, and suffered a sprained ankle, but the family escaped what could have been a devastating tragedy with comparatively minor injuries.
Returning to his broadcast afterward, Bret reflected on the experience and the importance of appreciating life.
“I had to be here today to show you I’m OK,” he told viewers. “Count your blessings.”
The accident reinforced a lesson the family had already learned through Paul’s medical struggles: life can change in an instant, making every day and every moment together worth appreciating.

While Bret Baier continues his high-profile political career in Washington, his family remains at the center of his life. Their story is one of enduring love, difficult medical challenges, a frightening brush with tragedy, and an unwavering commitment to gratitude.
From the uncertainty surrounding their son’s health to the terrifying moments on a Montana highway, Bret and Amy have faced life’s most challenging experiences as a family.
Their journey is a reminder that behind the public image of a prominent television journalist is a husband and father whose greatest blessings are found at home — in the people he loves, the challenges they have overcome, and the time they continue to share together.
